Choosing a garden shed
Choosing a garden shed: finding the right material
There are several types of garden sheds, made from different materials. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are the characteristics of the garden sheds sold on the market:
PVC garden sheds
This is an inexpensive, high-quality product. PVC sheds are also easy to clean and maintain. If you opt for this solution, be sure to choose a PVC garden shed with UV protection. Garden sheds that are not treated against the sun's rays may discolor or even warp due to heat and temperature variations.
Wooden garden sheds
Wooden garden sheds are warm and attractive. It's appreciated for its natural appearance. It has good thermal properties. The quality of your garden shed depends entirely on the type of wood you choose and how it has been treated. Solid and exotic wood species are more resistant to weathering than conventional woods. Pine, for example, is frequently used in the manufacture of garden sheds, but must be autoclaved to resist water. Note that your wooden garden shed will need to be treated regularly against insects and humidity to remain in good condition.
Resin or composite garden sheds
Garden sheds made from resin or composite (a mixture of resin and wood) can imitate the appearance of materials such as wood or concrete. They're easy to maintain, strong and highly durable.
Metal garden sheds
Metal garden sheds have different characteristics, depending on the metal used in their manufacture. Steel sheds are the least expensive, but they are heavy and sometimes susceptible to rust (unless stainless steel). Aluminum garden sheds are more expensive, but lightweight, strong and durable. They never corrode or warp over time. No maintenance is required.
Your garden shed must have the necessary surface area to accommodate your garden equipment. You also need to be sure that you have enough space to install your garden shed without cluttering up your home's garden. The smallest sheds measure 3 m², sometimes less. Large garden sheds, on the other hand, can have a surface area of over 15 m². Be sure to check with your local town hall: a preliminary building declaration or building permit is often required before work can begin. You can opt for a single or double shelter. Double shelters have two well-compartmentalized areas, ideal for storage.
The roof of your garden shed can have two planes or be flat. Flat roofs are modern and trendy. They perform just as well as conventional roofs.
